The New Orleans Hornets fired coach Byron Scott today and replaced him with the general manager Jeff Bower. I like when organizations force their general manager to become accountable for the team he built. Looking at the roster the team is better than their 3-6 record. They have a nice front court featuring a defensive stopper, Emeka Okafor, a post scorer, David West, and a 3 point sharp shooter, Peja Stojakovic. However, with Chris Paul playing out of his mind (26.1 points per game, 9.3 assists per game and an other-worldly 62.2% shooting percentage) he could use a little backcourt assistance. Devin Brown and his career 40.2% shooting should not be starting. The fact of the matter is the Hornets have no one besides West who can create their own shot with Paul off the court. While the offense looks great under Paul's direction, they are lost without him. Perhaps trading Peja for a serviceable combo guard would help liven up the offense. They have surplus 3-point ability with James Posey and Morris Peterson so the loss of Peja would not hurt too much. Also some athletic bench play would help because God knows the whitest man in the league, Sean Marks, ain't offering much.
My boy Kevin Durant is going strong averaging 27 a game along with 7.5 boards. The Thunder are 4-4 and take on San Antonio Saturday in the Alamo.
Did anyone else think Speedy Claxton was retired? Reading over the Warriors roster today I saw he was only 31! I swear he played in the 90's.
Cap'n Jack Stephen Jackson is still waiting for that trade he requested in August. Coach Don Nelson has publicly criticized by Jackson's agent recently and the situation seems to be sticky. Jackson is a Lamar Odom/ Chris Webber type talent who can play anywhere on the court and consistently defends teams best player regardless of position. A 6-8 guy who can go for 20 points 5 rebounds and 6.5 assists a game as he did last year should have a lot of takers in the trade market, regardless of his checkered past (Remember the Battle at the Palace?).
One of TBG's all time favorite athletes, Antoine Walker, is back in the news. The oldest 33 year old, wasn't he an allstar like 15 years ago, I know wrote a check he couldn't cash in Las Vegas and is now facing felony charges. Looks like he over-estimated his funds just like he over-estimated his 3-point shooting ability throughout his career. The career 32.5% 3-point shooter never saw a 3 he didn't like and missed 2878 of his career 4264. While you have to commend his shooter's mentality, he could of benefited from a mirror during his career. You're 6-9 Antoine! Go under the hoop! Side note: Walker is currently available for any team! While the Grizzlies actually paid for him to not play for them by buying out his contract everyone knows the Grizzlies management doesn't know what their doing, right? Right?
PS: Bears over 49ers tonight!
