Beyond Sport

No, I did not make NFL picks this week. Rather than watching NFL all day, I saw Blind Side with my mom. Blind Side is a movie about the true story of Baltimore Ravens left tackle Michael Oher. SPOILER ALERT! If you do not know the story and want to see it all for the first time in theaters this is not the blog for you.

Blind Side is everything that is great about sports. Entered into Catholic school by a friend's father, the parentless Michael is eventually kicked out of his friend's house when times get hard enough for their own family. Left with nowhere to go Michael lives homeless, lost in a world who only sees him as Big Mike. Eventually Michael is taken in by a family with both the resources and hearts to care for him. For the first time Michael learns about family and trust. When given something of his own Michael will fearlessly protect it. Michael eventually becomes a football stud after never having played organized ball before. He gets a full ride to Ole Miss where he becomes an All-American and becomes a first-round NFL draft pick. Obviously that is not a complete synopsis but it'll do.

What I love about sports is the equality it offers. If you're good, you'll play. People will want to help you. Sports are pure in a largely impure world. What makes Big Mike stand out and be ostracized day-to-day makes him fit in and become a hero on the field. Playing soccer at U of I, I play in a lot of pickup games. I have played with people from Brazil, Belize, Taiwan, China, Japan, Mexico amongst other countries. The game is its own language on the field. I remember playing with a Bosnian trio of kids when I was about 13. After the first day of practice my dad/coach and I talked about the one who played forward. He was a bull on the ball and finished very well. A natural provider on the field, I knew I had to develop a relationship with him. While his English wasn't great and his circumstance was quite different than mine we played extremely well together the next two years. It wasn't Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison, but we had some good nonverbal communication in games. Trust me, we scored a lot of goals together. And that's what makes sports so beautiful. Whether it's Texas Western winning a National Championship in basketball with the first all black starting five or Jesse Owens showing where Hitler can shove his Aryan supremacy dogma, sport is blind to what people all too often see. What makes Blind Side so great is the fact that it shows how we can incorporate that purity into our daily lives.

GLORIOUS BREAK

What's up world? TBG is officially on fall break and could not possibly be more excited. Thank you to some of the dedicated followers of not only this blog but also my life for helping me make it here. Calling and writing me helped me keep my sanity. Expect much more frequent blog updates as I will be substantially less busy now. Onto the NBA.

Earl Boykins is back in the NBA! The 5'5 wonder and one of my earliest live basketball memories dropped 20 points in 31 minutes in his return against the Pistons Thursday. I can still vaguely remember watching a small blur running circles around opponents in my father and I's early days of Rockford Lightning basketball fandom. Great to see the 33 year old back in the league. Guys like him and teammate as well as fellow former Bolt Mike James are guys whose stories the NBA should play up more. Enough hero worship for the Kobes and LeBrons. Let's hear about the love for the game these guys displayed on their difficult paths to the league. Something real people can relate to.

Also, big ups to rookie PG Eric Maynor. You might remember him as the skinny sophomore that messed up your bracket a couple years ago. In 2007 he led Virginia Commonwealth to glorious upset over Duke. An 11 over a 6. Maynor is now backing up U of I pride Deron Williams for the Utah Jazz. When Williams went down recently Maynor filled in admirably. 13 points and 11 assists in your first NBA start ain't too shabby. Following it up with 24 points is special. Fellow rook Brandon Jennings looks ready to do some things in Milwaukee but watch for Maynor over the next couple years to really blossom. As with Golden State freshman Steph Curry I have a theory that playing as the only NBA talent on your college team makes you more prepared for the NBA. You have to really learn the game that way with every team you face focusing on stopping you.

Thursday Night Special

TBG here to call a Panthers win over the Dolphins tonight. The loss of Ronnie Brown really dooms the Miami offense for the rest of the season.

Also a side note. Sad to hear about Brock Lesnar's intestinal infection. For those who do not know, Lesnar lives in a remote location in the woods with his wife so he can have no distractions from his training. He only watches hunting shows on tv and the only thing he does for fun beside train is hunt. Its no hard to imagine Lesnar eating a bear or deer raw out in the wilderness after shooting it. Gotta cook your meat Brocky.

The Next A.I.

You may not know him yet, but I'm sure that once you see him play, you won't forget about him. His name is Brandon Jennings. The rookie phenom became the first rookie to score 50 points since Allen Iverson. His style of play is very similar to the once MVP Allen Iverson, but he is left handed. He has lightning quick speed and can shoot from anywhere on the floor. He even wears the number 3. Everything about his game points towards A.I. and i believe that this guy has got a great future. Last year he spent the season in Italy playing for Lottomatica Roma, but spent most of the time on the bench watching and learning the game. This really looks like all that watching paid off because Jennings is averaging 25.5 points a game and 5.5 steals a game. The Bucks are off to a 5-3 start this year mainly thanks to the help of Brandon Jennings and the future is only going to get better for this rookie and the team.

BREAKING NEWS

This just in! New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been fired! After last night's incredulous decision to go for it on 4th and 2 from his own 28 yard line with 2:06 left failed, Belichick knew he was in hot water earlier today.

"I really am fearful for my job," Belichick said. "I mean, looking at the media coverage today, I must really suck, right?"

Yes, Bill, you must. I mean your 70.6% winning percentage with the Patriots is really awful. 3 Super Bowls? Weak! A 16-0 regular season? Didn't get a ring that year did ya? So it came as no surprise today when Belichick was relieved of his duties and replaced by radio caller number 7 on Boston Sports Talk Radio, Steve Sagnoli.

"Belichick is a bum," Sagnoli said. "I mean, he makes that call all the time and converts it most of the time, but Kevin Faulk didn't bobble that ball, Belichick did! I definitely would have preferred giving Peyton Manning the ball with 2 minutes left at home down 6! Especially considering the fact that Peyton had over 300 yards already and 3 TDs!"

QB Tom Brady said he is happy to see Belichick go.

"I was sick of that stupid tattered hoodie he wore all the time," Brady said. "Seriously, have some fashion sense."

Considering the fact that Belichick had Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, an outstanding offensive line and a great all-around back in Kevin Faulk one really has to wonder what Belichick was thinking.

While some critics suggest that the real mistake the Patriots made was burning their final two timeouts, including using one to avoid a delay of game penalty on first down, on the final possession, preventing them from being able to challenge the Faulk spot, we here at CT&TBG know that is foolish!

Illinois Women's Basketball Wrap Up

CHAMPAIGN- Inflated turnover totals and shooting percentages reigned supreme Sunday as the Illini women’s basketball team rebounded from their season opening loss and won their home opener.
Before an Assembly Hall crowd of 2012, the young Illini squad squeezed the Siena Saints for 34 turnovers. Those ball handling miscues proved to be the difference as Illinois scored 49 points off turnovers and won 85-53.
“We want to make that an Illinois staple,” Illini coach Jolette Law said. “Tough defense creating attacking offense. We want to run.”
Benefiting from 26 fast break points the Illini shot 62.5 percent from the field. Freshman Karisma Penn led the Illini with 18 points on 8 for 13 shooting from the field. Fellow frosh Adrienne Godbold chipped in with 14 points. Senior Lacey Simpson stood out defensively with 6 of the Illini’s 18 steals.
An up and down game of extended runs, the Illini put the game away with a 22-3 run to open the second half. A 50-36 game at halftime after a buzzer beating put back by Senior Jenna Smith, the Illini held the Saints to 13% shooting in the second half.
“Illinois was what we expected,” Siena coach Gina Castelli said. “They took away everything we wanted to do.”
However, the game was not perfect for the Illini. The team’s youth showed with a majority of the 21 errors coming unforced. The team also shot an anemic 41.7 percent from the free throw line.
“I was shocked,” coach Law said. “We practice pressure free throws every practice.”
The game also featured a homecoming for senior Saint Allie Lindemann. The Champaign product hit a 3-pointer with 4:24 left in the first half that netted cheers from both teams fans.
“It was good to come home,” Lindemann said. “I always wanted to play on this floor.” She finished with 7 points.
Up next for the Illini is a Wednesday home game with the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Saints will look for their first win Friday as they host Eastern Michigan in Loundonville, New York.

NFL Picks

Already a glorious 1-0 with the 49er's W, I look to continue my winning ways with more picks. Last week didn't go so hot as my search for a perfect week formula blew up in my face. Back in the lab to try again.

Titans over Bills- The man to watch in this game is Jairus Byrd. The rookie out of Oregon has 7 INTs in his last 4 games including 3 consecutive 2 INT games! Look for that streak to end today as the Titans keep it conservative with Vince Young continuing to work into the offense.

Saints over Rams- The Saints should just spot the Rams 21 points and ball and start at the second half just to make this thing interesting. Saints win in a Brees.

Dolphins over Bucs- Rookie QB Josh Freeman won his opener over the Pack, going big with 3 TDs. OLB Joey Porter is out due to a fishy coaches decision. It's tougher to win on the road in the NFL. The rookie will learn the hard way.

Vikings over Lions- Actually thought about picking the Lions...

Jets over Jags- Third straight game with a rookie QB. Sanchez has bounced back well since his 5 INT debacle in Buffalo, 3 TDs 0 INTs 408 yards over the last 2 games. The Jags are hit-or-miss. On the road they miss. You didn't really believe me about the Lions did you?

Bengals over Steelers- The Bengals have made a believer out of me. The Steelers are red hot, ripping off 5 straight victories, but the NFL is crazy. And the Bengals have proven more to me with 2 wins over the Ravens and a W in the first game of this AFC North series.

Broncos over Racists- The Broncs have dropped 2 straight but the Racists have dropped 4 straight. Orton and that defense get back on track as the Zorn Watch continues.

Falcons over Panthers- Really thought about this one. The Panthers are playing better lately but an emotional loss at New Orleans make this one tough. Some of Panthers have to be thinking the season left last week after moving to 3-5 rather than 4-4.

Chiefs over Raiders- Game of the Century right here folks! The formerly incomparable JaMarcus Russell, thank you Derek Anderson, has a chance to break out this week. No, not because he is facing the lowly Chiefs, but Anderson is sitting this week! Russell can really separate this week in his run for Worst QB. A couple INTs and a sub-40 completion percentage could wow voters. Oh yeah, Chiefs rally around Larry Johnson's departure and create a positive for an organization starved for one.

Cowboys over Packers- DeMarcus Ware meet Aaron Rodgers. Aaron meet DeMarcus. And the Lambeau grass. The Original Contract Boosters will have a pretty easy job this week considering they are facing an opponent who actually should get a couple sacks. God, I don't even want to start imagining how this game is going to unfold. Just hope Ware doesn't take Rodgers head back to Dallas with him.

Cards over Seahawks- Hawks are winless on the road while the Redbirds are 1-3 at home after going 6-2 last year. Warner continues his hot streak after torching Da Bears for 5 TDs last week.

Eagles over Chargers- But the Bolts are hot you say? 3 straight wins? Oakland, Kansas City and a miracle 1-pointer over NY Giants ain't impressin' me. Eagles rebound from their Dallas debacle in a battle of great receiving Jacksons. My boy DeSean is the better of the two by the way.

Colts over Pats- Brady's Bunch are 1-2 on the road this year. Peyton Manning knows that and the number of catches the Pat's nickelback allowed in each of those games as well. He's the MVP so far and it's starting to feel like another Peyton year.

Ravens over Browns- My Super Bowl team have one hell of a schedule. This game is a brief respite from Dante's Inferno. A loss here though would result in an immediate 1 way trip to the 8th Circle (Fraud).

Upset Special

TBG here to make an unusual college football upset special alert. FLorida is my National Championship pick but call me the Black Eyed Peas because I got a feelin' they are going down today in South Carolina. The Old Ball Coach Steve Spurrier spurs his old team in a 17-13 nail-bitter!

Also shout out to TCU today. Playing Utah- remember them beating the stink outta Alabama in last year's Sugar Bowl- TCU has a chance to add a huge victory to their resume. If Florida drops today and wins the SEC Championship over Alabama we could be looking at an All Texas National Championship.

Look for Iowa to lose to Ohio State today. They had a great run but without Stanzi the Hawkeyes are a one-sided team. As much as I hate to say it, the Buckeyes will be Rose Bowl bound.

NBA News and Notes

The New Orleans Hornets fired coach Byron Scott today and replaced him with the general manager Jeff Bower. I like when organizations force their general manager to become accountable for the team he built. Looking at the roster the team is better than their 3-6 record. They have a nice front court featuring a defensive stopper, Emeka Okafor, a post scorer, David West, and a 3 point sharp shooter, Peja Stojakovic. However, with Chris Paul playing out of his mind (26.1 points per game, 9.3 assists per game and an other-worldly 62.2% shooting percentage) he could use a little backcourt assistance. Devin Brown and his career 40.2% shooting should not be starting. The fact of the matter is the Hornets have no one besides West who can create their own shot with Paul off the court. While the offense looks great under Paul's direction, they are lost without him. Perhaps trading Peja for a serviceable combo guard would help liven up the offense. They have surplus 3-point ability with James Posey and Morris Peterson so the loss of Peja would not hurt too much. Also some athletic bench play would help because God knows the whitest man in the league, Sean Marks, ain't offering much.

My boy Kevin Durant is going strong averaging 27 a game along with 7.5 boards. The Thunder are 4-4 and take on San Antonio Saturday in the Alamo.

Did anyone else think Speedy Claxton was retired? Reading over the Warriors roster today I saw he was only 31! I swear he played in the 90's.

Cap'n Jack Stephen Jackson is still waiting for that trade he requested in August. Coach Don Nelson has publicly criticized by Jackson's agent recently and the situation seems to be sticky. Jackson is a Lamar Odom/ Chris Webber type talent who can play anywhere on the court and consistently defends teams best player regardless of position. A 6-8 guy who can go for 20 points 5 rebounds and 6.5 assists a game as he did last year should have a lot of takers in the trade market, regardless of his checkered past (Remember the Battle at the Palace?).

One of TBG's all time favorite athletes, Antoine Walker, is back in the news. The oldest 33 year old, wasn't he an allstar like 15 years ago, I know wrote a check he couldn't cash in Las Vegas and is now facing felony charges. Looks like he over-estimated his funds just like he over-estimated his 3-point shooting ability throughout his career. The career 32.5% 3-point shooter never saw a 3 he didn't like and missed 2878 of his career 4264. While you have to commend his shooter's mentality, he could of benefited from a mirror during his career. You're 6-9 Antoine! Go under the hoop! Side note: Walker is currently available for any team! While the Grizzlies actually paid for him to not play for them by buying out his contract everyone knows the Grizzlies management doesn't know what their doing, right? Right?

PS: Bears over 49ers tonight!

TBG

Bears Preview

Short week for the Bears this week which could really help them get over the embarrassing loss from last week. This is what I think the Bears should do to win tonight.
1. Get rid of your blitz package. According to Lovie Smith the reason for blitzing is to get your lineman in a 1 on 1 match with the o line. Now i always thought the reason for blitzing was so the you can get a man to come free to the quarterback, but apparently I was wrong. Lovie Smiths theory has shown to be false since the defense has given up 5 touchdown passes in 2 of the last 3 games. So just forget the blitz this week and sit back in coverage because it can't be much worse then blitzing.
2. Just pass. I do not care if i don't see a single run this week because this offensive line can not run block worth a shit. If Devin Hester has another reverse for a lose i may just kill someone. Clearly Jay Cutler is the only option for points this season, so just keep the ball in his hands. The Cardinals do it and as proof of last week it works.
3. Leadership. Someone on this team needs to become a leader or else this team may not win another game this season. I know your starting linebacker and leader of this team is out for the season but good players become great players when the can lead a team that is down. I'm talking to you Lance Briggs. This is the week to step up and show the world that this defense has some respect for themselves.

Saying this i believe the Bears fall short again tonight. The lack of defense, run game, and leaders is too great to overcome this short week. This week the Chicago sports radio stations get an early start on who to fire to make this team better.

The Contract Booster Division

Entering the 2009 NFL season the it looked like it was going to be a great year for the NFC North. After half the season gone by the Vikings are looking like a good choice for Superbowl Champs but the rest of the division is in big trouble. This year the NFC North is known as the contract boosting division because when you play the Packers, Bears, or Lions someone on your team is going to have a new contract for more money at the end of the year.
Let me start with the the Chicago Bears. In 5 of the 8 games the Bears defense has given up at least 200 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. In the 2 of the other 3 games they gave up 180 yards and a 1 touchdown, but lost both of the games. The only game in which the Bears have not given up 100 yards passing and a touchdown was against the Cleveland Browns, not a tough task to do. The Bears defense is only getting worse as proven in 2 of the last 3 games. Against the Bengals and the Cardinals the Bears gave up 5 touchdown passes. So if you are a quarterback and playing against the Bears expect to have a great game and boost your contract for next season.
Next we have the Packers. This year in 8 games the Packers have given up 37 sacks. If you take out the Cleveland Browns game, the Packers have given up at an average of 5 sacks a game. Jared Allen will have the biggest contract boost of the season thanks to the Packers line with 7.5 sacks in the two games against the Packers. The Packers have tried everything to save the line, starting rookies, vets, and even taking people out of retirement but nothing will help this offensive line. This week the Packers take on the Cowboys, go have fun Cowboys Defense.
Last we have the Lions. With 1 win on the season the Lions are much improved from last seasons 0-16 record. The problem with the Lions is their entire defense. If they stop you from throwing its because they aren't stopping you on the ground. If they stop your run game they forget that a quarterback can throw the ball and get beat through the air. So the person who gets a contract boost from this team is the Offensive Coordinator. Even the Bears were able to run for 100 yards against the Lions. So if you are an Offensive Coordinator looking to keep your job, look for the Lions on your schedule.
Instead of hurting teams in the playoffs, the NFC North will be trying to help players get more money next year. Look for a team from the Contract Booster Division in a city near you.

Guest Column: Introducing The Jaded Sports Fan

I thought overall the Strikeforce card was quite good. It was well presented and I really like the analysis of Frank Shamrock, I feel like he adds a lot of the broadcast without Gus Johnsons' signature overflow of hyperbole. The other annoucers was superfluous and should be replaced by someone who's thoughts are noticable. Overall I thought the quality of fights were very good, with a little something for everyone from hardcore fans to people watching MMA for the very first time.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva

The Werdum-Silva match was a hell of a comeback, after werdum got rocked and almost finished in the first round. He managed to stay alive by using the tactic most MMA fighters use against someone with superior stand-up. Werdum took Silva down again and again until it appeared Silva was too gassed to do as much damage in the stand-up as he did in the first round. Werdum won the 3-round decision, a decision I agreed with wholeheartedly and actually scored the fight 29-28 myself giving Silva the first round and Werdum the next 2. Werdum showed tremendous guts and Silva showed some holes in his game.

Jake Shields vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller
The Shields vs. Miller match was a great grappling contest, although Miller's antics get old fast. Maybe instead of mugging for the camera while being pressed up against the cage to show his distaste for Shields' gameplan he should have tried to execute a reversal, and then maybe he gets the rear naked with a minute left in the round instead of 7 seconds. Just a thought Mayhem. However, Shields' came in with a clear and concise gameplan, he was going to test the stand-up with Miller, and if he didn't immediately get the better of it, take the fight to the ground. Shields executed this to perfection, taking Miller down at will and controlling him there. Miller, however, seemed to live up to his moniker "Mayhem". He didn't come in with any clear gameplan other than to try to land big shots on his feet. When taken down, as discussed earlier he decided to mug for the camera rather than execute a strategy to win the fight. Mayhem's lack of focus and Shields' razor-sharp focus was the difference in the fight. Although Shield's game seemed vulnerable against someone with superior take-down defense.

Gegard Mousasi vs, Ramieu Thierry Sokoudjou
I was particularly excited for this fight because I'd heard lots and lots of hype regarding Mousasi and never saw him fight. I have to say I was disappointed, I thought that Mousasi's stand-up in the first round was lazy and overconfident. Maybe he just knew that even if taken down by Sokoudjou he wouldn't be in any danger and was trying for the submission, but if that's the stand-up he goes with against UFC caliber LHW, a straight jab is going to rock him when he puts his hands up for no reason like he did. I was impressed with Mousasi on his back, and that foot sweep he pulled at the end of the first round came out of nowhere and was very impressive, however, I expected more from the DREAM Middleweight grand prix winner and a fighter who has gotten as much hype as Mousasi has. Here's hoping that Mousasi is tested harder in his next fight. As Sokoudjou really showed nothing new to his game that we haven't seen before, and I really hope this is the last time he fights on a major US card.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett "The Grim" Rogers
The Fedor-Rogers fight was far better than I thought it would be, Rogers really showed some aspects to his game, the fact that he was able to stand up as easily as he did after being taken down proves he can hang with anyone in the world, and he almost made good on his punchers' chance in the first round, but of course against Fedor, everyone ALMOST gets him, then they get knocked out by a punch that would have stunned a buffalo. However, Rogers really showed he has staying power in the Heavyweight division and Strikeforce really showed tonight that in the Heavyweight division, especially since signing Fedor, they can hang with the UFC in depth and quality at the top.

Overall, I would rate the card a win for Strikeforce, it had a little bit of everything, good technical grappling and striking that can be appreciated by hardcore fans. And a huge highlight-reel knockout climax on the night that everyone could enjoy, well maybe except Brett Rogers.

Week 9 NFL Lessons

I looked for the magic potion and found poison. A 7-6 week hurts, badly. However, this beating had a couple lessons with it.

1. The Bengals are REALLY for real. Early on I knew their D was legitimate, but Carson Palmer, 14 TDs 7 INTs, is almost back to his old self while Cedric Benson continues to rebuild his image. They took a crucial game from my Super Bowl Ravens this week but I can't be mad because the Orange and Black flat outplayed the Dirty Birds twice this year. At 6-2 with a glorious 3 game stretch remaining: Oakland, Cleveland and Detroit, the Bengals are in the playoffs easy. Once there they are ready to make some serious noise.
Side note: Ochocinco's dollar act was legitimately funny. If a lot of guys were doing stuff like that it would become a real distraction from the game but Chad's originality and consistent production make it acceptable and endearing. Be ready to dole out $29,999 more of those though, Chad.

2. The Packers and Bears are done. After taking Woody Paige's advice and looking at the schedules, the preseason powerhouses are finished. The Viks are too strong and both teams have ozone layer sized holes. The Packers O-line continues to amaze me with their inability to do much of anything. If there is such a thing a Rotating Door of The Year Award the corp seems to be battling for it. The starting roles themselves are making a run. Two men out of retirement thrown into action?!? And still the Pack gave up 6 sacks. 37 total in 8 games. That's 4.6 a game! 5.3 when you take out the abomination that is the Browns (more on them in a moment)! According to ESPN.com box scores Aaron Rodgers has been hit 60 times this season. The Contract Boosters face a great test next week as the Pack play Dallas. DeMarcus Ware is starring 3 sacks right in the face. Maybe the O-line can give up 8 sacks to get back to their early season form of 5 sacks per game!
The Bears likewise are held back by a putrid D. Once the pride of Chicago the unit doesn't look like they could stop a red light. At 4-4 with 2 games remaining against Minnesota and dates with the Ravens and Eagles remaining the Bears can kiss their playoff hopes good bye.

3. The Browns are unbelievably bad. They flat out suck big time. This team's only win came in a 6-3 game over Buffalo. Who even wants that win? That game set offense back a good 10 years in the greater Cleveland and Buffalo areas. QB Derek Anderson completed 3 passes that entire game. 2 to his team for 23 yards and one to the Bills' Jairus Byrd for 14. His last four games stats read like this 29/ 87 for 320 yards. Brett Favre threw for 334 yards on 33/50 in Week 7 alone. The only positive for Anderson's season is the fact that he and Raiders' QB JaMarcus Russell are in a dead heat for the season's worst QB title. Both feature 2 TDs 9INTs. Anderson has a commanding lead in QB rating sporting a flossy 36.2 compared to Russell's 48.3. Anderson also is winning the incompletion battle, missing his target 57.1% of the time while Russell successfully misses only 51.6% of his targets. The biggest question in this mess is how bad do the Browns think Brady Quinn is? I mean, he can't do better than a 2 completion game? What do you say in the huddle in practice after a 2 completion game? "Alright, coach called halfback pass but I'm gonna have to audible outta this one guys. Not trying to get shown up here." Anderson is so bad he only managed 6 completed passes against the Bears D. But worth noting is the fact that the Browns are the only opponent to not sack Aaron Rodgers this year. The only hit him once! Coach Tom and I decided it would be in everyone's best interest if Anderson retires effective immediately following his next INT, returned 14 of the $24 million he got from the Browns and just buy a small island. I mean, on the spot retire. Throw the pick, walk off the field and head straight for the car his wife has running out front.

Week 9 NFL Picks

Sitting at 75-41 I am looking for a perfect week. No week goes as expected. Call me the prognosticating alchemist, searching for the perfect balance of upsets and run-of-the-mill victories each week. After tinkering in my lab, I think I have found it! The perfect week potion! Let's put it through the scientific method.

Falcons over the Racists- This can't be the upset I am looking for, could it? The Racists are coming off a bye week normally means a sharper team. But this team is dull, in desperate need of the As Seen On TV Magic Knife. A lot of former Racists say current coach Jim Zorn isn't what the team needs. Look for him to be Chopped soon.

Bears over Cards- The Cards are 3-0 on the road and Da Bears are 3-0 at home. The Cards are the Kim Kardashian to winning's Reggie Bush. On again off again the Cards have one W of any significance. But I am going to call their Giant victory an aberration. QB Kurt Warner threw 5 picks last weeks. While the Bears D only have 7 INTs on the season, the absence of wideout Anquan Boldin due to injury will allow the Bears to focus on Larry Fitzgerald and contain him. Cutler finds Hester for a big TD.

Ravens over Bengals- Every potion has a starting point and my Super Bowl team is just that. They came out on fire after their bye week to destroy the then undefeated Broncos. Ray Lewis and company still have it and redeem their home loss to the Orange and Black.

Texans over Colts- A key ingredient to my potion. The catalyst. Certainly a close game. The Texans can wing it. And saftey Bob Sanders is out for the season for the Colts. But Peyton Manning is on FIRE. But this is a rivalry game. Yes, the Texans always play the Colts close but this time the trap snaps fast enough. Peyton Manning's tail will hit the ground just enough to slow down his attack as Texans QB Matt Schaub goes Galileo. Wideout Andre Johnson probably could catch a ball thrown to the moon and he very well may as Schaub goes for an astronomic passing yards total.

Pats over Phins- Joey Porter says referees have different rules for Tom Brady. He's right. He'll get penalized when he hits Brady. Brady will counter with 3 TDs.

Packers over Bucs- The Contract Boosters were back in full force after taking the previous week off last week. Six sacks allowed versus Minnesota was ugly. The jerseys the Bucs will be sporting will have you thinking of Betty. Bucs are on the fast track to the number one pick as they continue their win fast.

Jags over Chiefs- Kansas City is 26th in rush defense. Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew is the second best back in the league. The self-proclaimed second highest paid decoy in football pulls off some reverse psychology in a huge day.

Saints over Panthers- Like early season Jake Delhomme, this is an easy pick.

Seahawks over Lions- The birds soar too high for the kings of futility jungle.

49ers over Titans- I have love for Titans QB Vince Young but false confidence gets squashed quick in the NFL. A win over the bipolar Jags means little. Coming off 3 straight loses the 49ers are angry. A burning acidic anger makes for a strong perfect potion.

Chargers over Giants- 3 of the Chargers 4 wins are on the Raiders and Chiefs. Weaker than nonalcoholic beer. But 2 of the Giants wins come from them too. The Giants have been blown out by good teams. The Chargers have lost close. A razors edge to the road team.

Eagles over Cowboys- Two shared opponents: Tampa Bay and New York Giants. Both beat the Bucs. Eagles 33-14, Boys 34-21. The refs call it a push. Philly killed NY, 40-17. Dem Cowboys 33-31. Both had em at home so you gotta favor the Eagles.

Steelers over Broncos- Most of my Broncos losing potions have blown up in my face. Last week I straightened it out. The Steelers have figured it out after a slow start. Hot off serving the Viks their first loss of the season the Steelers continue their rude ways.

That's it. Nothing left to do but watch the reaction unfold.

Yankees Again

Back on top. 27 titles. The New York Yankees returned to prominence tonight with great pitching and clutch hitting from a foreign import. Hideki Matsui, TBG's favorite Yank, came up huge in tonight's clincher and will likely be World Series MVP. While the Bronx Bombers benefited from hired guns like A-Rod, Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia, they aren't champions without young homegrown talents Joba Chamberlain, Robinson Cano and Phil Hughes. While the role players came up big this year the Yankees won again for one reason. Their veteran nucleus. Mariano Rivera is the best pitcher of his generation. Hands down. The 39-year-old save machine is 83 of 86 in save situations over the past two seasons. Coming into today's game he had a career 0.75 ERA over 131.2 postseason innings. And oh yeah, he does it all with one pitch. Hitters can't hit his cutter because he doesn't even know where it is going. The other face of the Yankees ain't bad either. In an era scarred by steroid use Derek Jeter never hit more than 24 homeruns in a year. He just hit a career .317, played a 3-time Gold Glove shortstop and became both the all-time hits leader among history's shortstops, post-season players and Yankees. For my money, he is the best hitter of this generation (I'll count the Pujols Era slightly after). Finally, tonight's winning battery Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada also earned their 5th rings tonight. It's easy to hate the Yankees for being so good and so dirty rich but a talented core like Pettitte, Jeter, Posada and Rivera is undeniable.

BCS Mess

Facing the final stretch for the college football regular season we still have an amazing 7 undefeated teams. Time to breakdown each team and project their season ending status.

Flordia- The Tebow Train will roll into an SEC championship with the Alabama Tide. Look for them to just eek out a victory over Florida State on 11/28 as the Seminoles play their hearts out in what could easily be Bobby Bowden's last game. While Tebow and the offense get most of the press Florida had given up a measy 88 points through their first eight games. This defense, which returned all 11 starters from last year's National Championship team, is the reason for Florida's success.
Projected Finish: 14-0 ,National Champion

Alabama- Another SEC team with a loaded defense. The Tide will roll over LSU at home this weekend and cruise into the SEC Championship game. While Bama is tough their defense is not as good as Florida's. A 14-10 loss in the SEC Championship will erase their National Championship dreams.
Projected Finish: 13-1

Texas- No doubt they will finish undefeated. They will stomp whoever ends up winning the Big 12 North in the Big 12 Championship game and be 13-0 at that point. The BCS likes them as they currently sit #2 in the standings. While I do not agree with it, we will have another SEC vs. Big 12 National Championship. However, Texas is not the second best team in the nation and will get blown out as Tebow makes it 3.
Projected Finish: 13-1 BCS Championship Loser

Iowa- Never pretty but unblemished, the Hawkeyes are the only 9-0 team in the nation. While Iowa is not your typical college powerhouse, they play like championship caliber NFL team: win the turnover battle, run the ball and play solid defense. While it may not be chic in a Spread happy era, it works. The Hawkeyes will expose Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor in two weeks and finish their outstanding start. However, while the BCS has given more love than the human polls the Hawkeyes will not be able to jump Texas or Florida and be relegated to a Rose Bowl meeting with Oregon.
Projected Finish: 12-1 as they drop to Oregon

TCU- I love this team. They play swarming defense, feature explosive special teams and a QB with only 3 INTs all year. I would love to see them go against one of the major college heavyweights but know it won't happen. The BCS currently has them 6th. It will be interesting to see how a win over Utah will help their standing but have no practical shot for a National title.
Projected Finish: 13-0 with a non-championship BCS bowl victory

Boise State- They shocked the nation with a victory over Oklahoma a couple years ago as an unknown. While they are nationally known now, they only have one major victory to show for their 8-0 start. The more Oregon does from here on out, the more they do for Boise. It doesn't hurt to have a win over the best 1 loss team in the nation. But a weak WAC conference will not help their national argument. Undefeated but unrecognized will be their fate.
Projected Finish: 12-1

Cincinnati- This team is for real. They have a prolific offense, regardless of if it's led by their #1 or #2 QB. Currently fifth in the BCS the Bearcats will get a boost when they win over West Virginia. I see them pulling out a victory over Pitt and finishing 12-0 going into the final BCS poll. No love for a weak Big East conference though.
Projected Finish: 13-0

That's right, three undefeated teams at the end of the year. While Florida will be crowned the "official" champion, TCU and Cincinnati will cry foul. This year will go down as the biggest argument for a playoff in college. Eight team bracket style tourny anyone?

NFL Week 8 Picks

Texans over Bills- The Houston team has been hot lately and look for QB Matt Schaub to continue his hot streak.

Bears over Browns- Bears move on to 3-0 at home with an easy win.

Cowboys over Seahawks- The Boys are hot but is Miles Austin for real? One great game is something. Two is a streak. Will he make it a trend?

Lions over Rams- The Ineptitude Bowl ends on a Rams QB Marc Bulger fumble returned for a touchdown in overtime to break a 0-0 tie.

Colts over 49ers- Peyton Manning will continue his MVP run.

Jets over Phins- Dolphins will be flat after blowing last week's Saints game.

Eagles over Giants- The Eagle's secondary outplays the Giants young receiving core. Look for DeSean Jackson to have another explosive TD after 2 last week for the Eagles.

Ravens over Broncos- Baltimore must win this game. After 3 straight loses and coming off a bye week the Ravens D puts up an inspiring performance behind Ray Lewis.

Titans over Jags- Jacksonville is one of the most inconsistent teams in the NFL. Vince Young sparks the Titans to their first win of the season.

Chargers over Raiders- The Bolts easily win this Cali battle.

Packers over Vikings- This die-hard Packer Backer picked the Viks in the first meeting. The O-line looks to be improving, 0 sacks allowed last week. Everything else on the Packers team looks Super Bowl caliber as long as the defensive coordinator puts some heat on Brett this time around.

Cardinals over Panthers- Maybe the Super Bowl loser curse can't take the dry Arizona heat.

Saints over Falcons- The only way the Saints can lose this year is if a team gets an early lead against them. The Falcons' D is not good enough to hold Brees off early. The opportunistic Saints' D will frustrate QB Matt Ryan as NO rolls on.
